About Douglas College: Douglas College, established in 1970, is named after Sir James Douglas, a former governor of British Columbia. Notably, Kwantlen College separated from Douglas College in 1981.
Coat of Arms: On January 21, 2020, Douglas College unveiled its coat of arms, featuring a design by Coast Salish artist Carrielynn Victor. This logo commemorates the college’s 50th anniversary and is the first insignia in Canada entirely crafted by an Indigenous artist. The motto, “Do what you love,” is symbolized by the heart at the logo’s center, while the crown on top is crafted from locally sourced cedar wood.
The crest showcases a raven, symbolizing intelligence, surrounded by two Douglas fir trees, signifying the college’s namesake. Below the shield, the words “Excellence, Knowledge, Passion” are written in Coast Salish, recognizing the college’s location on First Nations land.
Controversy and Resolution: In January 2012, Global’s 16×9 news magazine investigated alleged fraud at Douglas College’s Chinese partner campuses. Academic staff members reported concerns about the English proficiency of some Chinese graduates. The investigation revealed fraudulent practices, including make-up tests, black market answer sheets, and grade tampering. President Scott McAlpine’s alleged response to the issue raised further questions.
Subsequently, both Douglas College and the British Columbia Ministry of Advanced Education conducted an investigation.
